Concert Experiences
Do these bands fux live?
Jalopy Folk Music - Jalopy Theater
June 5th, 2022
While the first part was a little PG, once the teachers came on and the kiddies were tucked in, this school house-by-week turned into something wicked. 5/5 to kick your summer off right.
Victor V Gurbo & Phil Robinson at Carnegie F**King Hall
June 2nd, 2022
Oh ya just went to go see legendary Host Phil Robinson and legendary preacher acoustic guitarist Victor V Gurbo sell out Carnegie Hall. You better believe this was 5/5. Take that Andy!
Blackwater Holy Light - St Vitus Bar
May 22nd, 2022
Ok, so after seeing a concert yesterday in South Greenpoint, I figured it would be crazy for me to double that distance to see a concert the next night. Well pluck my harpsichord and call me Willow because both my mind and ear drums were blown. 6/5.
Maybird, Gooseberry, The Atlas Engine - The Knitting Factory
May 21st, 2022
After a slow start Maybird pumped it up to 11. My only regret was getting there a little too early.
Moon Hooch, Opener - The Teregram Room
May 14th, 2022
See Moon Hooch on the night of a Lunar Eclipse on the Pacific Ocean? Oompa, Oompa, Oompa, Oompa
Satvo, Crimson Brûlée - Lucky 13 Saloon
May 5th, 2022
Try being dressed in a Blue Button down at a metal show. Satvo blew our minds while Brûlée were fucking clowns. #HDtD
???, ??? at ???
May 4th, 2022
No, you're a bad bad audience and you dont get to know which band I saw live. Lets just say it was like watching Ed Sheeran, but without the bullshit. Left when the main act started covering Gnarls. ?.?/?
Miles Francis, Kalbells, RaFia - The Sultan Room
April 27th, 2022
I only get one concert every three months on the Sultan Room, so I need to make it a good one. Ill admit my plan was just to Kalbells (4.5/5) and dash but after a rogue encounter with Mr Fancis (3/3) in the crowd I was impelled to stay for a few tracks. RaFia: 3/5, plenty of attitude, but she could work on her rhymes.
Tom West - Rockwood, Stage 3
April 19th, 2022
The hummingbird from afar came down to play what was a most intimate show totaling 4 people in the crowd. He at least pretended it wasn't weird and played a 5/5 show.
SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE, Deeper - Elsewhere
April 10th, 2022
A rare trip to the crowded Elsewhere Hall 1. Was familiar with both bands, another rarity. Deeper 3/5, SOTB 3/3. Wish Id stayed longer but phone was at 1% and I didnt need to be stuck in Greenpoint for the night.
AndHeHadName OUT
Bedouine, Hannah Post - Public Records
April 1st, 2022
Absolutely awful worst concert of my life, 0 stars...April Fools! Bedouine, what a lovely affair (4/5), and April Fools! The name of the opener was Hannah Cohen (1.5/2), but it was hard to tell from the angle.
Strange Ranger, Ray Bull, Tony or Tony - The Broadway
March 24th, 2022
Finally made it back out to The Broadway (just a few streets down from Wonderville) to see Strange Ranger, only to find out they play better orange (3/5). Still couldn't have asked for a better dance partner (4.5/5) (he knows why) and at least Ray Bull had some chops (3.75/5). Tony or Tony also played (2.5/5).
#GLOBALBEATCYPHER - Wonderville
March 19th, 2022
The nerdiest and dirtiest club in all of Brooklyn. Boasting an impressive 3 men for every 1 woman in attendance, this space is redefining what a Gentleman's club can be. The DJs were hot, the Beat Battle was valiant, the body odor tolerable, and the arcade games were free-to-play. 4/5 From bottom left: Vicky Casis, Quis Chandla, Dr. Mistalow, Suga Jay (backward hat), Urban Acoustics (forward hat).
Pile (Solo), Felicia Douglass - TV Eye
March 12th, 2022
Second trip to hip and trendy TV Eye in Queens. Apparently 'solo' is short for 'so-lo-fi' you'd think you were at a Michael Nau concert. Nothing about the Jones was uttered all night and Mr Fish made no appearance. Still he can stretch his mouth while vocalizing. 3.5/5. Felicia Douglass for her part wowed the crowd 4/5.
Friend Animation - Chez Moi
February 19, 2022
Too cold to go out so had to make the liminal musical experience come to me. Listen to this playlist: Friend Animation while watching this sci-fi short compilation: New Worlds. Enhance as needed. 5/5
Spud Cannon, Steele FC, Mt Feral - Purgatory
February 12th, 2022
Shirtless Saturday was in full effect as Spud Cannon led a night of persistent sex in the form of music 4/5
Public Records - Underground System
January 27th, 2022
A Jam-band, or the emptiness of the human soul. Points for being the only gluten free option.
Deem Spencer, LifeOfThom - Bowery Electric
December 16th, 2021
Was there for Deem, but LifeOfThom might have been the Main Event. Deem kind of yelled at the crowd (though there were a couple of people talking non-stop, like go to the back if you dont want to shutup and enjoy the show) (3.5/5), LifeOfThom got everyone swaying and such beforehand (4/5)
AndHeHadAName - Chez Moi
December 11th, 2021
Missed my concerts, so decided to do things from the other side. Played the rift notes to Every Breath You Take and a few chords from Jumper 3/5.
TWRP, Rich Aucoin - The Bell House
December 1st, 2021
*Ahem*, I believe the genre is 'Nerdcorp'. TWRP indeed was from the 80s and the future. 4/5. Rich Aucoin was Hipster Kenny Chesney and the best part is he played CNN (3.5/5) Unlocked the three Wednesday concerts in a row achievement 🏆
San Fermin, Opener - City Winery
November 24th, 2021
Been meaning to hit the bougie-hip out of place City Winery for a while. Could not have picked a better band. Claire Wellin (violin) was something else. 5/5
Toledo, dad sports, Hala - Indie Venue, soft lighting pallet
November 17th, 2021
Unfortunately only caught a song or two from retro psyche group Hala(2/2), but dad sports(3/5) and Toledo(3.5/5) were passable. #SadBoys4Lyfe✌️ 😥
Tristen & Aaron Lee Tasjan - Rockwood
November 12th, 2021
Glorious return to Rockwood, Stage 2 for another slice of red, white, and true Americana. Tristen (right duo) gets 5 Honks, while Aaron Lee gets 5 Tonks.
Evolfo, Castle Rat, Reverend Mother (The Great Rat Summoning) - The Sultan Room
October 29th, 2021
It would be impossible for me to fully depict the events that happened on the stage (and in the audience) this night. Suffice it to say, the Rat King was summoned and battled all while Castle Rat and Evolfo played the audience into a psychedelic frenzy 4.5/5
Scotch Mist/Mons Vi - East Berlin
October 22nd, 2021
This was my first time taking my parents to a real New York concert, so I had a lot of expectations, which made the weak performances by both bands so disappointing. To put it lightly, you could barely hear the music over the racket they were making 2.5/5
Lotus - Irving Plaza
October 15th, 2021
If someone asks you to come to see Lotus an hour before set time, you say yes. They get 🎷🎷🎷 funks
Pictureplane, Negative Gemini, ESPRIT, Vitesse X - Baby's Alright
October 8th, 2021
Technically came for PP (top) and Neg Gem (hands), but ESPRIT (middle) and Vitesse (not pictured) really stole the show. 4.5/5
Phil Robinson Presents - Mary Os
October 5th, 2021
Only got to see Jason Vitelli & Phil Robinson perform, so I can only give a 2/2, but it is great for them to finally be back live!
Erykah Badu - Radio City Music Hall
September 30th, 2021
2.5/5
Indigo DiSouza w/ Horse Jumper of Love - Baby's Alright
September 25th, 2021
Sold Out. ???/5
Seth Kessel - Anyway Cafe
September 18th, 2021
Not really a formal concert venue, but another kind of music experience that exists. Come for the Russian food, stay for the great guitar. 4.75/5
Petite League - The Broadway
September 10th, 2021
Went to go see Petite League on a whim, but shout out to the opener Noods pushing concert to 4.75/5. Whoever is doing these soft pallet light installations must be making bank
Emo Music - Arlene's Grocer
September 3rd, 2021
Went to see Kyle Duke with a friend, but missed his set, instead saw the Boastfuls, Kulick, and BRKN LOVE. A grown up Warped Tour (RIP) fan's wildest dream. 4.5 #InBread
No Concert
Week of August 22-28
This marks the first week since early July that I did not attend a concert. I took care of this girl instead. 4.5/5 (she knows why)
Valley Maker - The Bell House
August 19, 2021
Move over David Roback (RIP) and Hope Sandaval, there is a new ambient shoegaze duo in town! 5/5 sit down experience.
Wilsen w/ Renata Zeigur - Kisnet Garden
August 11, 2021
The rare concert where two of my favorite bands are playing on a rooftop. And it rained. And I had a date. 9.5/10
79.5 - The Sultan Room
August 5, 2021
Went with friends, best concert of their lives. For me, best concert since at least last Friday. 4.5/5
Tomberlin - TV Eye
July 30, 2021
Tomberlin really focused on building up the audience's self-esteem. 5/5. Im beginning to sense a pattern in the lighting effects...
The Argonaut & The Wasp - Elsewhere Rooftop
July 22, 2021
How many people are willing to come to the Argonaut & The Wasp album release party on a Tuesday night at Elsewhere? 4/5 rock out, but not much better than opener (Middle Part).
Mikaela Davis - Rockwood, Stage 2
July 16, 2021
Can't get more low-key than Mikaela Davis at the Rockwood. 5/5
Music at Mary-Os with Phil Robinson
July 13, 2021
Local concert promoter I know who puts on shows throughout Manhattan. Has been running monthly live streams during pandemic but he will be back to live shows starting in fall. 5/5 as always.
Bassh - Rockwood, Stage 3
June 26, 2021
Pretty sure I was the only person at the show that did not know Bassh, or wasn't brought by someone who knew him. Did Chris Isaak cover. 4/5, just a little short.
